Maximiliánova fontána
Slovakia
Stand on Hlavné námestie, the main square of Bratislava's Old Town, and the fountain at its western side is the oldest in the city. It dates from 1572, and you will often hear it called the Roland Fountain, a name the Slovak record flags as incorrect. The figure on top is not Roland, the medieval emblem of civic freedoms and the right of the sword, but Maximilian II himself, the first Hungarian king crowned in Bratislava, cast as a Christian knight and protector. Turn to follow his gaze and you will find he is looking straight at the town hall.
