Mikulov Castle
Zámek Mikulov
Baroque château on a rock over the town, twice burned and twice rebuilt.
Mikulov Castle sits on the rocky hill called Zámecký vrch right beside the town centre, and it is one of the landmarks you navigate by. A Romanesque stone castle stood here in Přemyslid times; it passed to the Liechtensteins in the 13th century and was rebuilt in Gothic form, then sold in 1560 to Ladislav Kereczenyi, who began converting it into a Renaissance château. From 1575 the Dietrichsteins carried out the extensive rebuilding that gave it its present Baroque character. Today it holds the permanent exhibition of the Regional Museum in Mikulov and hosts events including the annual wine harvest festival.
