Mirbachov palác

Slovakia

Stand at the northern end of Františkánske námestie and the building that closes the square is not a castle at all but a town palace: four wings, two storeys, saddle roofs, laid out on an irregular trapezoid around an inner courtyard. The main front facing you is strictly symmetrical, and its surface is worked with light, airy rocaille ornament in inventive shapes. It counts among the finest and best-preserved Baroque-Rococo buildings in Slovakia, and since 1975 it has been home to the Bratislava City Gallery, the second-largest gallery in the country after the SNG. During opening hours you can simply walk into the courtyard for free.
