MUZA | Severočeské muzeum v Liberci
Czechia
Before you even reach the door, the building tells you it is playing a part. Professor Friedrich Ohmann of Prague designed it in a romantic, historicising style, and it was built in 1897–1898, blending the forms of a church with those of a palace. Above it rises a replica of the Renaissance tower of Liberec's old town hall, and attached to the side is a so-called burgher's house, recalling the townhouses that lined the streets at the end of the 18th century. From the park on Masarykova třída, where a bronze bust of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk was unveiled on 7 March 2010, the whole complex looks less like a museum than a small medieval town compressed into one address.
