Palác Motešických

Slovakia

Look for number 5 on Gorkého Street in Bratislava's Old Town, tucked behind the theatre, and you find a building that wears two centuries at once. The lower storeys are Empire style, the restrained classical manner of the early nineteenth century, and the whole is protected as a national cultural monument. Yet the roofline is not what it once was. Until 2008 the palace stood in its original form; since then it has been reconstructed and raised by several floors. So what you see from the pedestrian zone is part preserved monument, part new addition. The source is a little loose on its age: it gives 1840 as the building date, calls it first half of the nineteenth century, and elsewhere calls it a monument from the beginning of that century.
