Palais Chotek
Austria
Palais Chotek stands at Währinger Straße 28, in Vienna's 9th district, Alsergrund. It is a palace, not a castle, and a fairly businesslike one. It was built between 1871 and 1874 by the architect Lothar Abel for Count Otto Chotek, who lived from 1816 to 1889. The original building was long and only one storey high, designed in a strict historicist manner in the style known as Neo-Viennese Renaissance. That was the borrowed language of the Ringstrasse era, when new money and old titles alike dressed their houses in the manners of Italian palazzi.
