Palais Damian
Austria
You find Palais Damian at Lange Gasse 53, in Vienna's eighth district, Josefstadt, and despite what any label might suggest, it is no castle. It is a Baroque town palace that began life as something gentler: a garden palace, built around 1700 for Karl August von Damian, a wealthy timber merchant. The date is given only as approximate, and the name of the master builder has not come down at all. What has survived is the building itself, set back from the street behind a courtyard, so that you meet it first through railings rather than face to face.
