Palais Eskeles
Austria
You find the Palais Eskeles at Dorotheergasse 11, in Vienna's first district, and today it houses the Jewish Museum Vienna. The ground beneath it, though, was church property long before it was anyone's palace. In 1414 the Augustinian canons founded the Dorotheerstift in this neighbourhood, buying up neighbouring buildings until, by the early sixteenth century, the monastery took in the frontage of what is now number 11. Rising upkeep costs soon pushed the canons to let and sell parts of the complex, including this plot.
