Palais Ferstel
Austria
Begin with the name, because it is not quite true. Palais Ferstel, on the corner of Herrengasse and Freyung in Vienna's 1st district, was never a palace. Its official name was the Bank and Stock Exchange Building, and the grander label only stuck after a renovation between 1975 and 1982, once it was in private hands. Heinrich Ferstel built it in the Neo-Renaissance style between 1856 and 1860 for the privileged Austrian National Bank, which had bought the whole plot between Freyung, Strauchgasse and Herrengasse in 1855 from Count Franz Xaver von Abensperg und Traun. Today it is best known as the home of the Café Central.
