Palais Hansen
Austria
Start with the name, because it is not quite honest. You will see Palais Hansen on the hotel signage and in guidebooks, but the building at Schottenring 20–26, in Vienna's 1st district, was never a palace at all. It is a Zinshausgruppe, a block of rental houses, put up between 1869 and 1873 by the Allgemeine Österreichische Baugesellschaft to designs by the architect Theophil Hansen, in the Neo-Renaissance style. The grand title arrived much later, with the developers who bought it in 1997. Keep that in mind as you look up at the façade: what reads as one aristocratic residence is really eight separate houses wearing a single, unified front.
