Palais Rottal

Austria

You find Palais Rottal on a street corner in Vienna's first district, where Singerstraße meets Grünangergasse. Despite its billing, this is no castle with towers and moat but a city palace, and a working one: today it houses the Volksanwaltschaft, Austria's ombudsman office, and the Finanzprokuratur, the state's legal representative. Before you look up at the façade, look at the doorways. The two portals and the vestibule behind them are all that survive of the original Palais Rottal, probably created between 1667 and 1683 by remodelling an earlier building. Even that date range is hedged: no architect's name is recorded. The design is attributed to Giovanni Pietro Tencalla, who was working for the Rottal family in those years, but it is an attribution, not a signature.
