Pálava Protected Landscape Area
Chráněná krajinná oblast Pálava
Limestone steppe and oak wood over the Dyje — a UNESCO biosphere reserve since 1986.
The Pálava protected landscape area was declared on 3 May 1976 and covers 85 km², rising from 163 to 550 metres — the summit of Děvín is its high point. It takes in the ridges of the Pavlovské vrchy, the Milovice forest and the depression south of it toward the Austrian border. What it protects are the richest habitats of rock, turf and meadow steppe, forest-steppe, thermophilous oak woods and scree forest that have developed on these limestone hills. In 1986 UNESCO added it to the international network of biosphere reserves. The administration sits in Mikulov, with the Dům přírody visitor centre at Dolní Věstonice.
