Panna Marie Bolestná

Czechia

You find this church on Na Slupi, a street at the southern edge of Prague's New Town, just south of the Charles University botanical garden. Its full name is the Church of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows at the Elizabethines, and it is easy to walk past: a single-nave, high Baroque building with a small tower rising from its front, built in 1724 and 1725. It was designed by Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer, not as a standalone church but as part of the neighbouring Elizabethine convent and its Hospital of St Elizabeth. Church and convent are protected together as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic, and it helps to see them that way, as one working complex of prayer and nursing.
