Parlament
Austria
Stand on the Ringstraße and look up the long ramp, and the building in front of you seems to have been carried here from Athens. That is close to the truth. Theophil von Hansen designed it, and it was built between 1874 and 1883 under Franz Joseph I as the imperial Reichsrat building, the seat of the old empire's parliament. Today it houses Austria's Parliament and counts among the largest and most significant parliament buildings in the world. The ramp is no mere approach: on 12 November 1918, before a crowd waiting on the Ring, the Republic was proclaimed from it.
