Parnas
Czechia
Stand in the middle of Zelný trh, Brno's old vegetable market, and the fountain in front of you is less a basin than a crag. Massive blocks of crinoid limestone are piled into a tall rock, and at its heart a small cave opens on three sides. This is the Parnas fountain, a Baroque work designed by the Viennese architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and built between 1690 and 1696, now protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. Fifteen stone posts linked by chains ring it, leaving the water reachable from three sides.
