Pichlschloss

Austria

Pichlschloss sits on a small rise 876 metres above sea level, just west of Neumarkt in Steiermark in the Murau district of Upper Styria, inside the Zirbitzkogel-Grebenzen nature park. Walk round to the east and you see why the site was chosen: the ground drops away over a step in the terrain, held up by battered rubble-stone walls with terraces between them. The core of those retaining walls dates from the 16th or 17th century, and the brick pillars with little pyramid caps along the fences above them were added around 1900. Today the house runs as a hotel, owned by the same family for three generations.
