Přemyslovský palác

Czechia

The building you have come to find answers to two names. Officially it is Zdík's Palace, after Bishop Jindřich Zdík, for whom a bishop's palace was built alongside the new Church of St Wenceslas, consecrated on the castle hill in 1131. It is also sometimes called the Přemyslid Palace. The two names pull in different directions, one pointing to a bishop and the other to a dynasty of princes, and that tension is the point. From that moment, the source says, the Olomouc castle was shared between the appanage princes and the bishops. You find the palace on the eastern side of the complex, beside the cathedral, on the rise known as Václavský or Dómský hill in the historic centre of Olomouc.
