It was built to answer the parish Church of St Egidius across the square: the church for the soul, this building for the council, the trade and the social life of the town. Walk around it and you will find a compact two-storey block on a regular rectangle, its long sides running north to south, with tall gables at each end of a steep tiled saddle roof. It is often described as the first secular Renaissance building in Slovakia, although late-Gothic elements are still plainly there; what you are looking at is the moment one style starts pushing into another.
