Rathaus
Austria
Stand on the Hauptplatz and the Rathaus fills one whole side of your view: a late-historicist, Old German-style front with a central bay that projects the full height of the building, crowned by a dome, and small towers at the corners. It is the working seat of the city government, home to the mayor's office, the municipal council and parts of the administration, so this is not a museum piece. The south wing is dated 1889 and the main wing 1893, and what you see today largely matches that final building phase. It is, however, plainer than its architects intended.
