Rímsky vojenský tábor v Iži
Slovakia
Seven kilometres east of Komárno, beside the village of Iža, a square of low stone lines sits on the bank of the Danube at a spot locals call Leányvár, the Maiden's Castle. This is the Roman fort usually identified with Kelemantia, and its position is what makes it unusual. On this stretch of the frontier it was the only Roman fortress pushed forward onto the left bank of the river, facing the great legionary camp of Brigetio, today's Szöny in Hungary, across the water in the province of Pannonia. Stand at the southern edge and you are looking back towards the empire. Turn north and you face the lands of the Quadi and Marcomanni, the people this outpost was built to watch.
