Rotunda svatého Jiří a svatého Vojtěcha

Czechia

You reach the rotunda only by climbing, because it sits on the very top of Říp, the solitary hill in the cadastral territory of Mnetěš, in the Litoměřice district. The heritage protection here covers not just the small church but the hill itself, so the walk up is part of the monument. At the summit you meet a compact Romanesque building of the classic kind, with small windows and thick walls, counted among the oldest surviving structures in the Czech lands. It was first dedicated to St Adalbert, Vojtěch in Czech. The name of St George, patron of the Přemyslid dynasty, is recorded only from the 16th century onwards, which is why both saints share the title today.
