rozestavěná lanová dráha Tži kříže

Czechia

Start with the name, because it is wrong. Czech signs and newspapers tend to call this a lanovka, a word that covers cable-hauled lines of every kind, from aerial ropeways to funiculars. What the town of Karlsbad actually set out to build here was a rack railway: an electrically powered line climbing from Vřídelní, the old Sprudelgasse, up to Vrch Tři kříže, the Hill of the Three Crosses. Construction began in 1913. When the First World War broke out, work stopped in 1914, and the trains never ran. What you walk past today is the shell of a railway that is still, more than a century later, unfinished.
