Ruine Ligist

Austria

Ligist's castle sits on a grassy knoll in the north-east of the village, a south-eastern spur of the Wartenstein and the Ligistberg that falls away steeply on three sides. The plateau rises a good 40 metres above the market centre, with the Tuschbach brook on its northern flank and the Marktbachl to the south. Parts of the slopes were shaped by hand, and the way in came from the north-west across a protective ditch, which an arched bridge still spans. Below you runs the valley that once carried the old trade road from the Kainach valley over the Hebalm into Carinthia, a route used above all for hauling wine. Guarding that road is the most likely reason anyone built here.
