Sázavský klášter
Czechia
Sázava is really two monasteries laid side by side, and you see the whole story best if you start in the northern enclosure. Here the earliest buildings stood, and what survives is low: uncovered foundations and a little above-ground masonry of the Church of the Holy Cross, consecrated in 1070. It was a tetraconch, a square central building with four apses, and standing among those stubs of wall you can trace the clover-like plan with your eye. The southern enclosure, next door, holds everything that grew later: the Church of St Procopius (first dedicated to the Virgin Mary and St John the Baptist), the monastery itself, the rectory and farm buildings, with a watermill and a brewery also belonging to the complex.
