Schloss Eberau
Austria
You will probably not see much of Schloss Eberau at first. The castle stands on the southern edge of the village of Eberau in southern Burgenland, about 800 metres from the Hungarian border, and today it hides behind dense vegetation. Its moat has grown over with grasses. Yet this was once the largest moated castle complex in Austria, and the outermost of its water rings still encloses the entire village. It counts among the largest moated defences in Central Europe. Walk in from the market square and you are, in a sense, already inside the fortification.
