Schloss Erla
Austria
Schloss Erla sits on a hill above the village of the same name, about 1.3 kilometres south of St. Pantaleon in Lower Austria, and the first thing to understand is that it was never really built as a castle. What you are looking at are the buildings of the former Benedictine convent of Erla, described as the oldest women's convent in Lower Austria. The word Schloss came later, once the nuns had gone and the cloister had been reshaped into a residence. Today the whole complex is a listed monument, and so, separately, is the former convent church beside it.
