Schloss Fridau
Austria
Schloss Fridau is not one building but a small cluster of them, spread across a corner of Ober-Grafendorf in Lower Austria: a late-Baroque new palace, an older and far less regular complex beside it, a former chancery, a long garden pavilion and what survives of a once extensive park. If you arrive expecting a single grand façade, you find something more like a village of estate buildings, each from a different chapter of the place's life. Look closely at the front of the new palace, too. Some of the bullet holes in its façade date from May 1945, when the grounds were defended against advancing Soviet forces.
