Schloss Hof
Austria
Schloss Hof sits out in the Marchfeld, in the flat country of eastern Austria close to the Slovak border, and the first thing to understand is that the palace you walk towards is the product of several owners each remaking what the last one left. A castle was built here in the 1620s, to the east of what was then the medieval fortress of Hof. What stands now, though, owes its look less to those builders than to two later hands: a famous general late in his life, and an empress who folded the place into the imperial estates.
