Schloss Hofen
Austria
Schloss Hofen does not announce itself. It is a Renaissance residence of the 16th century, sitting near Lochau on the shore of Lake Constance, and from the lakeside it reads more like a substantial manor than a fortress. To understand it, look uphill. On a wooded knoll north-east of the village stands the ruin of Alt-Hofen, also called Burg Lochau, and the two belong together. From 1218 the court, or tower, at Hofen was the seat of ministerial officials serving the counts of Montfort, and it also housed the castle men of the fortress above. It stayed in Montfort hands until 1451. The very next year, 1452, troops of the Swabian League of Cities came through and destroyed the upper castle, and in 1456 the site passed as an Austrian fief to Jos Mündelin.
