Schloss Pernegg
Austria
Schloss Pernegg sits in the Mur valley in Styria, near Pernegg an der Mur, on the stretch between Bruck an der Mur and Frohnleiten. It exists because someone found the old castle unliveable. When Baron Gallus von Racknitz took sole possession of the lordship of Pernegg in 1576, it came with a medieval castle. With his own fortune and that of his wife, Anna, daughter of Adam von Trauttmansdorff, he built a new Renaissance residence a little lower down the hillside. Building ran for four years, from 1578 to 1582. The architect is not named. He was probably Italian, and may have come from the school of Domenico dell'Allio, who designed the Landhaus courtyard in Graz. Treat that as an informed guess rather than a fact.
