Schloss Seggau
Austria
You reach Schloss Seggau by climbing a wooded hill above the town of Leibnitz, in the south of Styria. The river Sulm loops around the base of the Seggauberg and separates it from the Kreuzkogel to the north. From the ridge the view runs down the Sulm valley and across the Mur plain to Slovenia and the Karawanks. The pilgrimage church of Frauenberg sits on its own knoll close by, and the Sulmsee lies below. The name itself is a small puzzle. 'Seggau' is simply an alternative spelling of 'Seckau', after the Upper Styrian abbey whose bishops long held the place, and the present spelling has been used only since the 19th century.
