Schloss Stainz
Austria
Begin at the west front, because it is a small puzzle. Between the two church towers, where you would expect a grand doorway, there is nothing: only a plain apse with no window and no entrance. That blank wall is the trace of a decision made when Provost Jakob Rosolenz rebuilt the neglected church between 1605 and 1629. The main entrance, which until then had stood on the west side between the towers, was moved to the east, into the inner courtyard of what was then a monastery. So to enter the church the way its builders intended, you turn your back on the obvious facade and go round.
