Schloss Wartholz
Austria
The name comes from something older than the house. Near the villa stood a late-Gothic lantern column, a Lichtsäule from around 1500, known as the Wartkreuz, and Wartholz borrowed from it. The towered, castle-like building you see in Reichenau an der Rax is far younger: it went up between 1870 and 1872, built by Heinrich Missong to a design by Heinrich Ferstel, in the historicist style. It was commissioned by Archduke Karl Ludwig, brother of Emperor Franz Joseph I, and it was meant less for display than for rest.
