Schwammerlturm
Austria
Walk west from the middle of Leoben's Hauptplatz along Homanngasse, a street only about 200 metres long, past the historic Stadttheater, and the tower closes the view ahead of you. It stands roughly 30 metres tall and is the only one of the town's gates to survive from its old defences, which is why it serves as Leoben's emblem. Locals call it the Schwammerlturm, from the southern German word for mushroom, because its rounded, roughly hemispherical roof overhangs the narrower top storey like a cap. Its proper name, Mautturm or toll tower, is hardly used any more.
