Austria

Joseph Maria Olbrich designed the building in 1897 as an exhibition house for contemporary art, and it remains one of the most important buildings of the Austrian Secession style, the local form of Jugendstil. It is still run by the artists' association that commissioned it, the Vereinigung bildender Künstler Wiener Secession. Under the dome, in gold letters, runs Ludwig Hevesi's motto: Der Zeit ihre Kunst, der Kunst ihre Freiheit, to the age its art, to art its freedom.
