Slavín
Slovakia
Climb high enough above Bratislava, onto the foothills of the Little Carpathians, and you reach Slavín, the city's memorial to the Soviet soldiers who fell during the Second World War on the territory of western Slovakia. The terraces give a view across the whole of Bratislava, and that view is why many people come. Under the paving and lawns lies the reason the place exists: 6,845 Red Army soldiers who fell taking the city in April 1945, buried in six mass graves and 317 individual ones. Together with the cemetery for the fallen of the First World War in Petržalka, it is one of only two military cemeteries in Bratislava.
