Slovenské národné divadlo
Slovakia
Stand on Hviezdoslavovo námestie and look at the front of the old theatre, and you are looking at one of a family. The Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Hermann Helmer built an astonishing 45 theatres across Europe, and this Bratislava house is one of them. The source cannot quite settle on what to call its style: it is listed as neo-Renaissance, but also described as a Central European blend of Baroque and Renaissance with a French accent, and elsewhere as a sober neo-Baroque that satisfied the appetite for pomp expected of official buildings. Hold all three in mind as you take in the façade. It is a national cultural monument, and until the new building opened it was the home of the Slovak National Theatre.
