Slovenské národné múzeum
Slovakia
Stand on the Danube embankment in Bratislava and look up at the front of this building, and you are reading a manifesto in stone. It is rigorously symmetrical: a projecting staircase climbs to an entrance portico, and above it two fluted neo-Doric half-columns run through two storeys to carry a heavy triangular pediment. That pediment originally held a relief of a ploughman with his horse, and the source says originally, so check for yourself whether it is still there. Between the windows of the first and second floors, smaller reliefs keep to the same theme of peasant labour. The facade's decoration is the work of František Úprka, and it tells you exactly what this place was built for: it began life as an agricultural museum.
