Špilberk Castle
Špilberk
Royal Gothic castle, Baroque fortress, then one of Europe's most feared prisons.
Špilberk crowns the hill it is named after and dominates Brno from the west. Founded in the second half of the 13th century by the Moravian margrave and later Bohemian king Přemysl Otakar II, it began as a front-rank Gothic royal castle and was rebuilt in the second half of the 17th century into a massive Baroque fortress — one besieged several times and never successfully taken. Its casemates were converted at the end of the 18th century into a notorious prison. Since 1962 the castle and its park have been a national cultural monument, and it now houses the Brno City Museum.
