Spišský hrad

Slovakia

Spišský hrad is a ruin, and a very large one. It covers the summit of a travertine mound, the Spišský hradný vrch, which reaches 634 metres above sea level and stands some two hundred metres above the land around it. At its height the castle complex spread across 3.9 hectares, placing it among the six largest castle complexes in Slovakia. It rises directly over the town of Spišské Podhradie, yet officially it lies within the village of Žehra, in its local part of Hodkovce, in the Spišská Nová Ves district. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993, listed together with Levoča and the monuments around them.
