Staroměstská mostecká věž

Czechia

Stand on Křižovnické náměstí, at the Old Town end of Charles Bridge, and the tower rises 47 metres over you: a square block of rubble masonry faced with sandstone ashlar. It looks firmly planted on dry land, but it was not always so. It was built on the first pier of the new bridge, whose foundations reused the remains of the vanished Judith Bridge, so it once stood directly over the river. Later building work and the levelling of the square have hidden that. Walk into the passage, eight metres wide, and look up at the net vault typical of Parler's buildings, its keystone carved as a royal crown. The fragments of Gothic painting up there were repaired and completed by the painter Petr Maixner during the nineteenth-century restoration.
