Starý hrad
Slovakia
The name tells you this castle lost an argument with its neighbour. Starý hrad, the Old Castle, was first simply Varín, and the records also give it as Warna, Varna, Owar, Owaar and Starigrad. It only became 'old' once Strečno was built nearby and took over its job. The two still face each other across the Váh, east of Žilina, but you are on the right bank here, high above the Domašín meander at 475 metres. Since 2017 it has been listed as a National Cultural Monument of Slovakia.
