Czechia

Stand on Malostranské náměstí and look for number 7, and you will notice that the façade does not run in one clean line. Part of it steps back. That recess is not a design whim: it is built on the foundations of a house called Na baště, "On the Bastion", and it marks the spot where, on 2 June 1541, a fire broke out that destroyed two thirds of the houses of Malá Strana and the entire northern part of Prague Castle, and damaged St Vitus Cathedral as well. Today the baroque palace that grew over those foundations belongs to the complex of buildings used by the Chamber of Deputies of the Czech Parliament, so you are looking at a working seat of politics sitting on the site of the city's worst blaze.
