Stift Dürnstein
Austria
From the river, the first thing you pick out is the tower: blue and white, almost ceramic in the way it catches the light, standing above the roofs of Dürnstein. It is widely treated as the emblem of the whole Wachau. Yet the building it belongs to has not been a working monastery for a long time. Stift Dürnstein was dissolved in 1788 under Emperor Joseph II, and its buildings, parishes and church passed to the Augustinian canons of Herzogenburg, who still own them and still look after the parish. The church, dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and a parish church since 1745, keeps its feast on 15 August.
