Sv. Mikuláš
Czechia
Look for the roof first. From almost anywhere in Louny the church announces itself through its three-part tented roof, three steep peaks side by side, with the sandstone tower beside them. Together they make the shape the town is known by. The tower, 60 metres high, is the one piece that survives from the original fourteenth-century church. Roughly 180 steps, counting the stair turret and the climb inside, take you past a strongroom that is closed to visitors, where important town charters were once kept. Above it is the open part of the tower, where five bells hang. At gallery level is the watchman's flat, where you can see part of an old pasteboard nativity scene. Step out onto the walkway, between the four corner turrets, and you are standing on top of the only part of the building that came through the disaster of 1517.
