sv. Mikuláš

Czechia

Step inside St Nicholas in Znojmo and the first thing you register is height without heaviness. This is a late-Gothic hall church: three naves of roughly equal height rather than a tall central nave flanked by low aisles, so the space opens sideways as much as upwards. Four pairs of slender columns, with no capitals at all, run straight up into a net-ribbed vault, a pattern the source links to the influence of Peter Parler. Over the long presbytery, three bays deep with a polygonal end, the ribs spring instead from cylindrical wall shafts. The building took a very long time to reach this form, begun in 1338 and still being worked on into the first half of the 16th century.
