sv. Vít

Czechia

You are standing in front of a high Baroque parish church built on borrowed ground. Before St Vitus there was a Gothic church of St Catherine here, first mentioned in 1356. By the 18th century it was in poor condition, and František Filip, Count of Šternberk, had it pulled down so that a new church could rise in its place. The foundation stone, with an inscribed record, was laid in 1772 in the foundations behind the high altar. The church was consecrated on 24 September 1775. The record calls that a relatively long build, because peasant unrest interrupted the work. The designer was František Kermer, an architect and builder from Hradec Králové and a pupil of Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer. The heritage listing covers more than the church itself: it also includes a stretch of retaining wall with valuable fencing, and the rectory at house no. 82.
