svatá Ludmila
Czechia
Stand at the western end of náměstí Míru and look up. Two slender, prism-shaped towers, each sixty metres tall, close the view not only of the square but of the five streets that run diagonally into it, most strikingly if you approach from the west along Jugoslávská. This is the Basilica of St Ludmila, a brick neo-Gothic parish church built at the end of the nineteenth century in honour of the princess Ludmila. It is one of the youngest churches in Prague 2, and one of the largest. Its place here was never left to chance. The planners of Vinohrady wanted three public buildings on the central square, a church, a theatre and a national house, and the church was assigned its spot in advance, on the axis of the main west-to-east road, in the middle of the square.
