svatá Markéta
Czechia
Stand in front of the basilica in Břevnov and the first thing your eye does is follow the curve. The façade swells and recedes because the building behind it does the same: the whole church is laid out on a plan of six intersecting ellipses. Three of roughly equal size carry the nave with the space beneath the organ gallery, and a smaller one forms the presbytery. On the attic above you, statues of the order's saints by Matěj Václav Jäckel (the source spells his name both Jäckel and Jäckl) look down. This is high Baroque, the main church of the Benedictine monastery here, the first male monastery in the Czech lands, and listed as a national cultural monument since 1991.
