svatý Bartoloměj

Czechia

Stand on náměstí Republiky in Plzeň and the first thing to understand is that this church is in an odd place. It sits on the north side of the square, right in the marketplace, when most planned towns of its time, in western Bohemia and beyond, pushed their church away towards the town walls for some peace from the noise of trade. Here the Gothic three-aisled hall rises straight out of the commercial heart of the town. It is 58 metres long and 30 wide, its vaults reach 25 metres, and its single tower climbs to 102.26 metres, the tallest church tower in the Czech Republic. When it was built it was reportedly the second tallest tower in all of Europe. If you want to feel that height, there are 299 steps to the top.
